International Women’s Day was celebrated at Tiyi Hall, Wokha on 7th March 2026, under the theme “Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls.” Organized by Wokha District Administration, Department of Social Welfare, District Hub for Empowerment of Women and SAKHI-One Stop Centre under Mission Shakti (BBBP) in collaboration with Lotha Eloe Hoho and WDLSA. The programme highlighted women’s contributions to society and called for safeguarding rights, ensuring justice, and promoting equality.
Special Guest, Secretary Home Department, Government of Nagaland, Elizabeth Ngully, NCS, in her address, spoke on the true meaning and historical inception of International Women’s Day. She emphasized women’s multifaceted responsibilities and contributions to all-round development despite facing discrimination and limited access in various aspects. She advocated the necessity of safeguarding rights and putting them into action, stressing that women’s roles in society often go unnoticed. She also highlighted the impact of early marriage on women’s ambitions, the importance of fairness in the workplace, and the need to address sexual and verbal abuses. She urged for awareness among men, encouraging them to raise sons to be responsible citizens who protect women’s rights and share household responsibilities. She reminded that the celebration should not be limited to a single day but serve as an eye-opener for all.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Wokha, Renbomo Ezung, delivered the keynote address, focusing on the essence of the celebration. He encouraged recognition of women’s achievements, protection of rights, and ensuring justice, while also stressing the importance of creating awareness among men for women’s rights.
Short speeches were delivered by President Lotha Eloe Hoho, Thungbeni Ngullie, and Miss Wokha 2025, Grace Kikon. The welcome address was given by the District Programme Officer and Nodal Officer, Mission Shakti, Bonathung Ngullie.
Felicitations were presented to the best performing Self Help Groups (SHGs) of Wokha district: Meruma SHG (Wokha Sardar Urban), Kikya SHG (Bhandari Block), Chanden SHG (Wozhuro Block), Kharoli SHG (Chukitong Block), Senthan SHG (Lakhuti, Sanis Block), Nzan SHG (Liphayan, Ralan Block), Nitsutchu SHG (Wokha Block Rural), and Ahuna SHG (Khahuthato Village, Chanpang Block).
Successful entrepreneurs of Wokha district were also felicitated, including Yours Happily Ever After, founded by Ekonlumi Ezung (event management and wedding planning); Likyaro Catering Service, a women-oriented catering service; and Perennial School Wokha, led by Proprietress and Headmistress R. Mhonroni Murry, who has over 15 years of teaching experience and has contributed significantly to education and community development.
Upcoming entrepreneurs and businesses were also acknowledged: Lum Emi Thera (floral business), Tssüro-Chonglong Weaving Centre founded by Mhalo Y. Ezung, Renjano Mozhui (professional makeup artist and hairstylist), Yithenyi (digital news platform), and Kijianbeni Ezung (fashion designer and boutique owner).
An exhibition on ornamental and flowering plants was also held. Winners of the ornamental plant category were GHSS Colony, Likya Colony, and Etsutchukha Colony respectively. In the flowering plant category, Chanka Colony secured first place, Likya Colony second place, and Niropen Colony in third place.
The programme was chaired by Central Administrator, Sakhi One Stop Centre Wokha, Thungbeni Kikon. Vote of thanks was delivered by District Mission Coordinator, DHEW Wokha, Wonjano E. Enny. A special presentation was given by Merilo Y. Tsopoe.
The celebration served as a reminder of women’s vital role in society and the collective responsibility to ensure their rights, dignity, and opportunities are upheld.
