The six-day SARAS Fair 2026, organised by the Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM) under the Department of Rural Development, Government of Nagaland, was inaugurated at Khuochiezie (Local Ground), Kohima on 26th March 2026 by Metsubo Jamir, Minister for Rural Development & SIRD who graced the occasion as the Special Guest.
SARAS (Sale of Articles of Rural Artisans Society) fair is also a platform that celebrates and recognizes the contributions of rural women by showcasing their products, skills, and craftsmanship.
The six-day event brings together participants from across the country and various districts of Nagaland, including six national participants, 23 departments and organizations, and 43 Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
In total, around 100 stalls have been set up, displaying a diverse range of products and innovations including food stalls by rural artisans and entrepreneurs. SARAS Live Stage also features artists performing live at the event.
In his address, Minister Jamir lauded the Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM) for providing a platform that connects rural artisans and producers directly to markets, enabling wider and even global reach. He highlighted that the fair showcases the rich cultural heritage of Nagaland, including organic products, handwoven textiles, and traditional crafts that reflect the identity and resilience of rural communities.
Emphasizing the role of women, he stated that over 1.30 lakh SHG members form the backbone of rural transformation in the state, contributing significantly to household incomes and community leadership. He also announced the operationalisation of a seed fund targeting 1,000 women entrepreneurs to further strengthen women-led enterprises and promote self-reliance.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting rural entrepreneurs through capacity building, financial inclusion, skill development, and improved market linkages. He noted that initiatives such as youth skilling programmes have already benefited over 9,000 Naga youths, creating employment opportunities and boosting the local economy.
Calling upon the public to support local products, Jamir said that SARAS Fair serves as a vital platform for collaboration among producers, buyers, and policymakers. He expressed confidence that the fair will continue to act as a catalyst for sustainable livelihoods and inclusive growth, contributing to a stronger and self-reliant Nagaland.
An invocation by Visato Yhoshü, Pastor, Union Baptist Church, Kohima. The programme also featured the inauguration of Skills-on-Wheels, a folkloric performance by Nagaland artists, and the distribution of laptops and printers to BC Sakhis.
