The Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class, Wokha, Julian Sitlhou, NJS convicted and sentenced one accused Abenthung Kikon to undergo simple imprisonment of 1 (One) year for the commission of an attempt to extort under Section 385 IPC, for mischief under section 427 IPC to simple imprisonment of 6 (Six) months and for criminal intimidation under section 506 (I) IPC to simple imprisonment of 6 months. The above-mentioned sentences of imprisonment shall run concurrently. The accused was arrested for extortion, criminal intimidation, and mischief causing fear to the victim and the passengers for forcefully stopping one Taxi passenger (Sumo) and demand of ransom money deliberately threatening the victim who was the driver of the sumo and even went up to the extent of damaging the windshield of the sumo. The case was investigated by ASI Zubemo Ovung successfully, and the prosecution was conducted by

Assistant Public Prosecutor, Wokha K. Renpemo Tungoe. Magistrate in her judgment said that “Bearing in mind the galloping trend of commission of extortion which are taking place everywhere very commonly and that if the convict is not punished adequately; he shall not have the fear psyche of not repeating such offense”.

The Judicial Magistrate First Class, Wokha Julian Sitlhou, NJS further stated that protecting society by deterring criminals is one of the main objectives of Law which will achieve by imposing an appropriate sentence.
