The Government of Nagaland has officially notified 19 local languages and dialects spoken in the state for the purpose of engaging Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) under the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communication, Government of India.

The notification, issued by the Home Department dated December 16, states that the identification of local languages is in line with the requirements of the Department of Posts for certifying language proficiency among GDS applicants. The languages identified include Angami, Ao, Chang, Chakhesang, Konyak, Khiamniungan, Lotha, Phom, Pochury, Rengma, Sumi, Sangtam, Tikhir, Yimkhiung, Zeliang, Garo, Mikir, Kuki and Kachari.

For the purpose of certification of proficiency in these languages and dialects, the Deputy Commissioners of the respective districts have been notified as the certifying authorities within their jurisdictions.

The notification will come into force from the date of its publication in the Nagaland Gazette.
