The Indian Red Cross Society, Nagaland State Branch observed World Red Cross Day with a Walkathon programme under the theme “Walk for Humanity” on May 8, 2026, in Kohima. The event commenced from the Red Cross Complex and culminated at Old NST, bringing together volunteers, officials, students, youth, and members of the public.

The programme was flagged off by Deputy Commissioner Kohima B. Henok Buchem, NCS, who is also the President of IRCS Kohima Branch. The occasion featured warm-up sessions conducted by the Nagaland Fitness & Body Building Association, a prayer by Secretary Social Concern NBCC Dr. Villo Naleo.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, MLA highlighted the significance of humanity and compassion in today’s conflict-ridden world. Recalling the life and humanitarian work of Henry Dunant, he said the founder of the Red Cross was inspired to begin humanitarian service after witnessing thousands of wounded soldiers abandoned during the Battle of Solferino in 1859. He noted that Dunant, though not a medical professional, mobilised villagers to help the injured irrespective of which side they belonged to.

Rhutso stressed that humanity transcends religion, race, and social barriers, adding that every individual has the responsibility to take a step forward in helping others. He encouraged students and youngsters to begin practising humanity through simple acts of kindness in daily life, such as sharing school supplies with classmates in need or being honest and compassionate in one’s profession and dealings with others.

Stating that problems in society are created by human beings and can only be solved by human beings, he asserted that lasting solutions are possible only through humanity. He urged participants not to let the “Walk for Humanity” end with the programme, but to carry its message into their homes, communities, and society at large.

Describing Kohima as an appropriate venue for such an event, Dr. Rhutso said the town represents people from different tribes, religions, and walks of life living together. He expressed hope that the walkathon would inspire people to come forward in helping those in need and continue nurturing compassion and humanitarian values in society.

Chaired by Convener Khyo TCK, the programme also included a welcome address by General Secretary IRCSN Akhale Khamo and a vote of thanks delivered by Vice Chairman IRCSN Dr. R. Rose Chakhesang.
