The Youth Resources & Sports Department, Government of Nagaland orchestrated the National Sports Day (Athletics Meet 2023) on August 25th, 2023, at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima. Kethosituo Sekhose, Director of Youth Resources & Sports, announced the event's commencement.

Sekhose emphasized that National Sports Day, celebrated on August 29th, commemorates the birth anniversary of Indian hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. The occasion serves as a reminder of the 'Fit India' theme, encouraging widespread engagement in sports for physical and mental well-being. Sekhose further shared that students from various schools, ranging from classes 8 to 10, were participating in the event. He expressed hope for increased school participation in the future.

The day's objective is to inspire youth to embrace sports and cultivate a healthy lifestyle. It serves as a platform to showcase the accomplishments and potential of Indian athletes across diverse sports disciplines. Additionally, National Sports Day is an opportunity to honor and acknowledge athletes, coaches, and administrators for their significant contributions to Indian sports.

 

Participating schools include: G. Rio Higher Secondary School, Loyala Higher Secondary School, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Grace Higher Secondary School, Bethel Higher Secondary School, Mt. Hermon Higher Secondary School, and Dainty Buds Higher Secondary School.
