Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench Judge, Justice Songkhupchung Serto, called the lawyers profession challenging during the foundational years especially pertaining to making an income out of it.
He was speaking during a three-day seminar on Legal Profession for lawyers organized by the High Court Legal Services Committee in collaboration with the High Court Bar Association, Kohima Bench at the High Court premises on 20th October 2021.
Speaking of his experiences which he himself endeared during the initial years of practicing under a senior, Serto opined that the amount of hard work put into catching up with the profession and the payment received in return was meagre. However, the passion to learn and struggle was key to producing refined lawyers. The judge was also of the view that charging fees in tribal communities was another challenge as the lot of populace here are ignorant of many subjects and procedure of law or courts.
The newly appointed additional judge of the Gauhati High Court, Kakheto Sema, while delivering a short speech urged the bar fraternity to continue to assist the court for the dispensation of justice and promote the practice of rule of law so that the end of justice is promoted. He also encouraged the upcoming lawyers to give time, effort, sincere and honest to achieve heights and limits of the profession.
During the two sessions held today, resource persons Laximidhar Pangari, Senior Advocate, Odisha and Kolkata High Court delivered talks on Difference between Article 226 and 227 of the Constitution of India and service jurisprudence and CT Jamir, Senior Advocate, Guahati High Court, Kohima Bench dwelled on professional ethics.
Article 226, give High Courts the power to issue any person or authority, including the government in some cases, directions, orders or writs and Article 227 gives every High Court power to have superintendence over all courts and tribunals throughout the territories regarding which high court exercises its jurisdiction (except a court formed under a law related to armed forces).
