The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is celebrated every 13th of October. This day is dedicated globally as International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction since 1989 after a call by the UN General Assembly to promote a culture of risk awareness and risk reduction. This year the International Disaster Risk Reduction Day 2020 is celebrated under the theme "Disaster Risk Governance".

The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department also joined the rest of the country in observing the DRR day today under the 2020 theme 'Disaster Risk Governance' which aims at Disaster Risk Governance to reduce the number of people affected by disaster and also to reduce economic loss. The NSDMA collaborated with the Institution for Disaster, Emergency and Accidents (IDEA) from Gujarat in observing this clay.

A webinar was held at NSDMA Secretariat, Kohima. Kazheto Kinimi (MLA), Advisor NSDMA, in his opening remarks stated that the Covid 19 has disrupted the countries globally and a clear vision is needed to act on scientific evidence which can be achieved through Disaster Risk Governance. He also stressed on the need to look into the Sendai Framework for DRR (2015-2030).

The Inaugural and Introductory remarks was given by Neelay Shrivastava, Director, Institution for Disasters, Emergency and Accidents (IDEA), Launch of Community Outreach Program (COP) was done by Pooja Saxena, DRR Lead, Institution for Disasters, Emergency and Accidents (IDEA), Launch of Online DRR quiz was done by Himani Tiwari, Research Analyst, Institution for Disasters, Emergency and Accidents (IDEA). The Lead UNICEF from Assam, Suresh spoke on UN International Children's Education fund while Dr. Ritu Chauhan, Health Securities and Emergency Team WHO and Dr. Shiela, SMO, Nagaland WHO also spoke on behalf of the WHO. A brief talk on DRR activities in Nagaland was also given by Johnny Ruangmei, OSD NSDMA. During the webinar a panel discussion by community on DRR was also moderated by the OSD NSDMA.
