World Oral Health Day 2022 (WOHD) was observed under the theme "Be proud of your mouth" at Auditorium, Kros College, Kohima on 20th March 2022. The programme was organised by the department of Health & Family Welfare under National Oral Health Programme.

Speaking on the theme, Dr. Pfukrolo Koza, Junior Dental Specialist, NHAK said the World Oral Health Day is celebrated every year on 20th March. The WOHD campaign provides an ideal platform to raise awareness and encourage commitments and action to promote good oral health.

He said that by leveraging thoughtfully coordinated efforts at local, national and global levels, the voice of the oral health community can be amplified in the lead-up to WOHD every year, he said. The WOHD aims to empower people with the knowledge, tools and confidence to secure good oral health. "The growing burden of oral disease demands action on every level: individual, family and community. World Dental Federation is confident that simple, targeted action has the power to curb the prevalence of oral diseases and make oral health a personal priority for all", he added.

Dr. Koza said, the mouth is teemed with bacteria like many areas of the body and good oral health care, such as daily brushing and flossing can keep these bacteria under control. However, without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral infections, such as tooth decay and gum disease.

Oral hygiene includes all the processes for keeping mouth clean and healthy. Good oral hygiene is necessary for prevention of dental caries, periodontal (gums) disease, bad breath, other dental problems and general health conditions, Dr. Koza added.

Emphasizing on the importance of good oral hygiene, Dr. Koza said good oral hygiene will keep away most of the dental problems saving one from toothaches and costly dental treatment and others.

Awareness regarding the importance of oral hygiene has significantly increased in the developed countries, but contrary to that, the modern dietary lifestyle habits are posing a greater risk for oral health, he said.

Dr. Koza also highlighted on the importance of proper brushing method, flossing, regular dental checkups and oral cancer screening.

Administrator Kros College, Vidilhou Souhu also gave a short speech and an extempore speech amongst the students was also held to mark the occasion.

Senior Dental Specialist, NHAK, Dr. Rosy Yhome chaired the program and also gave the closing remarks.
